Dr Ashok Borisa is one of the surgeons in GI Surgery and performed vast numbers of Oesophagectomy, a surgery to remove some part or all of the esophagus (the tube that carries food from throat to stomach) is called an esophagectomy. Dr Borisa has done many successfully minimally invasive Oesophagectomy Surgery to remove food pipe and then passage is rebuilt from part of your stomach or part of your large intestine.

Based on the stage of tumor, esophagectomy is decided and how much of the esophagus is to be removed. There are mainly two types of esophagectomy techniques. The open technique which is also called standard technique uses one or more large cuts in the neck, chest or abdomen. While the second technique is done through minimally invasive technology, in which a trained laparoscopic surgeon is performing GI Surgery through multiple tiny incisions using special long, thin surgical instruments. Minimally invasive procedure has lots of advantage over open surgery in terms of recovery, discomfort, duration of stay in hospital and many more.

Minimally Invasive Esophagectomy

For this procedure, surgeon need to be highly skilled and should have a great experience in removing esophagus and Dr Ashok Borisa is one of very few best GI Surgeon who has vast experience in performing esophagectomy. In minimal invasive procedure, the esophagus is removed through multiple small incisions rather one or two large incisions required in open surgery. A laparoscope (a tiny telescope) is inserted through small incisions which display inside images to a monitor placed in operation theatre, helping surgeon to perform a complicated surgery. As this procedure requires smaller size incisions, minimally invasive esophagectomy has advantage over conventional surgery, allowing patient to stay at hospital lesser period with faster recovery. sometime, no matter which technique of esophagectomy is done, as it is not a simple operation, it may require a long hospital stay. By removing the esophagus may cure the cancer, if it has not spread beyond the esophagus.

A feeding jejunostomy is always combined with esophagectomy to start feeding the patient early and therefore an early discharge from the hospital.
